Paul H. Perry is an accountant with over 40 years of experience and a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago. He started helping business owners in 1987, realizing many needed knowledge, not just financing, to run successful businesses.
In 1996, he founded AAIME, a nonprofit that bridges the gap between expensive consultants and ineffective government programs, offering support, networking, discounts, and guaranteed services.
Through AAIME and its partner New Link Access Corporation, Paul provides business owners with consulting, accounting, staffing, and professional services to help small businesses grow into successful enterprises.
Paying taxes may be unpleasant, but it offers important benefits for business owners. Taxes force careful tracking of income and deductions, which helps prevent overpayment and provides valuable data to plan for the future. By analyzing past income, expenses, and deductions, business owners can identify what works, spot new opportunities, and make strategic decisions—like investing in technology, upgrading equipment, or managing rent costs.
Even if deductions are low, taxes highlight areas to grow the business strategically to maximize future income. Key planning questions include: income goals, retirement plans, exit strategy, and succession options. These should be reviewed annually or every five years.
Ultimately, good record-keeping and timely tax filing are the foundation for control and growth. With discipline and proper guidance, such as AAIME’s support, business owners can turn success into a planned achievement rather than relying on luck.
All corporations start as C corporations unless they elect S corporation status. C corps are owned by shareholders (even one-person corporations) and file taxes on IRS Form 1120. They are taxed as separate entities, meaning corporate profits are taxed separately from personal income, and dividends to shareholders may also be taxed—but sometimes at a zero rate.
Key Tax Benefits of C Corps:
Minimize overall taxes – corporate profits can be managed via salaries and deductions.
Fringe benefits – medical premiums and other benefits are 100% deductible for employees.
Charitable contributions – up to 10% of taxable income, with carryovers for excess.
Net Operating Losses (NOLs) – can be carried forward indefinitely to offset future profits.
Constructive dividends – closely held corporations can pay shareholder bills, potentially tax-free at the federal level.
C corps are less likely to be audited than sole proprietorships, LLCs, or S corps, and they provide strategic advantages for managing taxes, deductions, and long-term business growth. AAIME can help small business owners understand and apply these rules to benefit their business and family.
The 80/20 Rule means 80% of your sales come from 20% of your customers. To use it effectively, profile your best customers and find new prospects with similar traits (location, industry, size, etc.).
Segment your market into A, B, and C customers based on sales volume and effort required. Focus on your “A” customers, while developing strategies to upgrade B and C customers into A-level buyers. Analyze purchases, time spent, and profitability to optimize marketing efforts.
By targeting the most profitable customers and replicating their profile, you can maximize sales, reduce wasted effort, and maintain a steady flow of new business. AAIME supports entrepreneurs with free, customized consulting to help implement these strategies and grow successful businesses.
